Title: Special Education Coordinator
Reports To: Principal
Compensation: $70,000 - $75,000 per year, plus performance-based bonus
FLSA Classification: Exempt
Calenda r: 11-Month

 

Our School 

Houston Classical Charter School (“Houston Classical”) was chartered by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) to open in Houston in August 2020, beginning with kindergarten and first grade. The school has an accomplished and committed Board, which includes a founding Board and a Head of School. We are looking for experienced, dedicated, and motivated individuals who are excited by the challenge of being part of a new school. The Role
The Special Education Coordinator is a key member of the leadership team, responsible for overseeing special education services. This role includes ensuring compliance, supporting instructional quality, and providing services to scholars with diverse learning needs. The ideal candidate will be an experienced special educator and leader, committed to delivering high-quality, mission-aligned support for all scholars.

 

Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities

Instructional Oversight & Compliance

  • Manage and ensure compliance of all IEPs and Section 504 Plans across grade levels
  • Monitor delivery of required services and ensure fidelity to mandated accommodations and modifications
  • Oversee and facilitate all ARD meetings, maintaining compliance with TEA guidelines
  • Support teachers in implementing effective differentiation and intervention strategies
  • Ensure scholars with disabilities receive rigorous instruction and appropriate support to promote academic and social-emotional growth
  • Supervise and support teachers, paraprofessionals, and related service providers
  • Conduct regular classroom visits across campuses to observe implementation and provide actionable feedback
  • Plan and lead professional development for teaching staff related to special education best practices
  • Maintain strong relationships with the families of scholars receiving special education services
  • Lead parent-facing workshops or trainings throughout the school year
  • Serve as the primary liaison between the school and the Committee on Special Education
  • Collaborate with teachers on behavior management plans and strategies
  • Meet regularly with teachers experiencing behavioral challenges in their classrooms
  • Monitor and support the implementation of behavior modification programs
  • Participate in weekly leadership team meetings to address school-wide special education issues
  • Meet weekly for check-ins with the Director of Special Education
  • Advise Principals and Assistant Principals on data-driven decisions and instructional planning related to special education
  • Serve as an advocate for high-quality special education within the school design
 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in Educational Leadership, or a related field preferred.
  • Texas Education Agency SBEC Certification in Special Education (required)
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build positive, trusting relationships with scholars, staff, and families
  • Demonstrated high academic results as a teacher and/or leader 
  • "Whatever it takes" mindset, with a strong focus on achieving results and overcoming challenges to ensure scholar success
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment
  • Highly organized and efficient in managing tasks, resources, and time to meet school goals
  • Consistently models professionalism, integrity, and ethical behavior in all interactions
