Summary

Participants will connect problems they are having within their comunities to current events in their nation and abroad.

Instructional Strategies

1. Prepare in advance or have your students collaborate to find sources to learn about current events that may be similar to situations occurring in school or in the home.

2. For example, if discrimination, violence or mistreatment is an issue in your school or in students' homes, find a current event that involves these issues.

3. Deconstruct what happened in the larger community; how does it apply to the current situation in your school or your students' homes?

4. In addition to connecting school/home with the wider local community, expand to the global community of nations or cultures.

5. Together with your students, find a current event in another country; reflect and critically analyze that event.

6. Then, discuss that event and in the context of local or national news.
