"Patterns of Connection"

Activity

Summary

Participants will be able to connect with new members in their classroom to generate a more cohesive environment.

Instructional Strategies

1. To build community in your classroom, have students write down four names: 3 classmates that they want to get to know better, work on a team project or assignment with, or just sit next to approximately once a month (or more often) and also, have them write down the name of one classmate who has been a good friend during the prior time period.

2. As the leader/teacher, study these responses to look for patterns in order to identify kids who are struggling to connect with others, or who are isolated or lonely.

3. Who is not being named or requested? Who is not getting friend nominations?

4. This exercise can be critical to enabling connections to the un-named kids.
