Summary
Socratic dialogue transforms a student’s learning experience by allowing youth to generate and express their own ideas while the teacher asks questions. It is collaborative, intellectual dialogue facilitated with open-ended questions about a topic, text, or issue. When done purposefully, the outcome is improved student achievement in speaking, listening and writing; higher youth motivation; fewer behavior problems; and a more respectful school culture.
Instructional Strategies
1. Ask your students probing questions about a topic, text, or an issue.
2. Students generate and express their own ideas prompted by your thoughtful questions.
3. Your open-ended questions and their responses generate a collaborative, intellectual dialogue.
4. This practice promotes student achievement in speaking, listening and writing; higher youth motivation; fewer behavior problems; and a more respectful school culture.
Participant Tasks
1. In response to your teacherÃs probing questions about a topic, text, or an issue, generate and express your ideas in a collaborative, intellectual dialogue.
2. By actively participating in this Socratic dialogue practice, your speaking, listening, and writing skills will improve and you will contribute to a more respectful and inclusive school culture.
