"Talking Stick"

Activity

Summary

Participants facilitate a discussion by using an object to indicate who is speaking, focusing on the speaker, and actively listening to the person who is speaking.

Instructional Strategies

1. Select a tangible object like a stick, a flower, a ball, or something important to the group to use in facilitating civil discussions and collaborative activities.

2. Clearly state the three rules of this activity: 1) only the person with the item speaks, 2) all others focus on the person with the item in hand, and 3) anyone has the right to pass.

3. Those without the item are expected to actively listen.

4. Start the activity with a question to discuss. A sample opening question could be, ÒHow can we improve systemic injustice in our school, city, country, the worldÉÓ
