"Restorative justice"

Activity

Summary

This is an approach to justice that focuses on the needs of the victims and the offenders, as well as the involved community, instead of satisfying abstract principles or punishing the offender. Participants seek to understand the needs of a victim and attempt to reintegrate offenders into the community as contributing members.

Instructional Strategies

1. Have participants focus on relationships and building community.
2. Have them focus on the needs of the victims and the offenders, as well as the involved community, instead of satisfying abstract principles or punishing the offender.
3. This approach counters the "no tolerance" policies currently in place, especially for more minor offenses.
4. Victims take an active role in the process, while offenders are encouraged to take responsibility for their actions, to repair the harm they've done by apologizing, returning what was lost, or through community service.
5. The restorative justice approach provides real justice for the victim and helps the offender to avoid future offenses.
6. This process fosters safe dialogue between victim and offender and provides the highest rates of victim satisfaction and offender accountability.

Participant Tasks

1. Focus on relationships and building community.
2. Focus on the needs of the victims and the offenders, as well as the involved community, instead of satisfying abstract principles or punishing the offender to counter the Òno toleranceÓ policies currently in place, especially for more minor offenses.
